Episode 11: “Hearts Like Stones”

Following Christine’s elimination, Carlo and Kevin quickly realize that their heads are now on the chopping block. The former Blues are now on a mission to eradicate the remaining members of the former Red Team.

David, in particular, is intent on sticking to this agenda, saying, “There are still two more to go, so we’re just going to train even harder next week and get rid of the old Red Team one by one.”

Saved from elimination, Kevin knows that he has just been given another week to prove himself. Carlo reminds him that he needs to step up his game this week in order to move above the yellow line.

Despite being the second week of singles already, there is still a clear divide between the former Red and Blue teams. Choosing to stick with what they are familiar with, all the contestants continue to work out with their original trainers.

Kristy knows that Carlo and Kevin have to pull large numbers this week in order to survive in the competition.

Kevin, being the largest in the group and with the most weight to lose, admits, “I’m kind of scared about my position in this competition, because I know it’s very hard for me to catch up. I think I’m more motivated now because I know there’s only a few more weeks left. I really have to push hard, to show that I can do this.”

With his new found determination, Kevin is working out harder than ever before, much to the delight of Kristy, “With Kevin falling below the yellow line for the past two weeks, it has given him the momentum that he needs to push forward. Now I see this intensity and a hunger in Kevin that I’ve never seen before.”

While on a break from their workout, Kevin reveals to Kristy and Carlo just how unhealthy his life back in the Philippines used to be. His favourite foods consisted of bacon and eggs, pork knuckle, fried chicken, donuts, juice and soda. He also admits to eating 3 boxes of pizza every day as a late night snack.
Kristy is shocked by Kevin’s old lifestyle, saying, “You name it, this boy used to eat it, and every single day! There was not one shred of healthy food. So he’s quite open now with how his lifestyle has changed, and he’s quite proud of how far he’s come.”

Before the training session ends, Kristy gives her two remaining Red team members a goal for the week - burn up to 3,000 calories per session. Kristy does this with the aim of them losing a kilo a day, and that will hopefully be enough to save them.

With only a few weeks left to go in the competition, Dave and Kristy decide to spice things up with the remaining seven contestants by testing their fitness and strength, specifically, their biceps strength. Dave has a score of 123 kilos and puts a Singapore $1000 bill up for grabs by the one who’s able to beat his score.

The contestants are excited by the prospect of winning Dave’s money and dive right in. Tony, David and Aaron all fail to beat Dave’s score. It is now Carlo’s turn and with one big heave, he lifts 146 kilos and wins the prize money. Kevin is the last one to step up to the plate, and pulling the handle bar with all his strength, he achieves a bicep strength score of 149.5 kilos. Incredibly happy with his win, Kevin unashamedly takes the Singapore $1000 prize money from Carlo and even rubs the note on his chest!

Kristy puts it, “this was definitely a boost of morale for Kevin... it was exactly what Kevin needed.”

The next day at the challenge, Sarimah informs the contestants that they will each have 5 minutes to burn as many calories as possible, using the allocated workout equipment. Throughout the course of their training, Kristy and Dave have taught them various methods of exercise, and it is now time to put that knowledge to the test.

David isn’t too worried about the task at hand, saying, “It’s only 5 minutes you know. We train for 12 hours every day! I think five minutes shouldn’t be a problem.”

With immunity up for grabs once again, burning calories has never been viewed with so much importance to the contestants. All seven of them get off to a strong start, with most choosing to use the stepper. Tony jogs on the spot with weights in his hands, while Martha and Kevin decide to skip rope. Thinking carefully about what Kristy has taught him, Carlo knows that the big muscle groups burn the most calories. He picks up a 25-kilo barbell, hoists it over his shoulders and runs up and down the stepper.

Under the scorching sun, this challenge proves to be a lot more difficult than the contestants had imagined.

Comments Aaron on the physical exertion, “After 3 minutes, the legs were burning, starting to feel the fatigue. After 4 the mouth was dry, the lungs started to burn and the sun definitely did not help.”

The contestants are exhausted by the time the 5 minutes are up. It is time for Sarimah to reveals the results, and Carlo’s smart strategy of using the big muscle groups pays off, as he emerges the winner. Carlo’s calorie count of 153 calories burnt is almost double that of David’s second pace result of 83 calories.
Unable to contain his excitement, he shrieks out loud, “Yes I finally won something!”

The win of immunity was especially sweet for Carlo. “It’s just so sweet to have immunity, because I know that I am their biggest threat, and the moment I fall below the yellow line, I will be the one going home.”

Carlo also wins an online shopping spree worth USD 1000.

It was time again for the weigh in, and as Carlo had won immunity, he is the first to step onto the scale. However, his smile is quickly replaced with a look of disappointment as he sees that he has only lost 2 kilos this week.

Having lost a total of 30 kilos to date, Carlo’s total percentage weight-loss now stands at 22.73%. King David is next to weigh in, and he too loses 2 kilos. But with a total of 45 kilos lost in the competition and a weight-loss percentage of 28.66%, he jumps into top spot on the grid. Tony steps up and loses 3 kilos, which sees his total weight loss move up to 33 kilos. With a percentage of 24.26%, he leapfrogs Carlo into second place.

However, things don’t stay that way for long. Aaron loses 3 kilos, which puts his total weight-loss at 40 kilos and a total percentage loss of 25.16%.
Aaron is definitely happy to overtake both Tony and Carlo, but he keeps in mind the bigger picture of winning the game.

As Aaron puts it, “It definitely feels good to see my name in second place. At the moment I’m 5 kilos below David. Now the hard part is keeping it there. And who knows, maybe I’ll dethrone King David.”

Kevin is the last man to step up the scale. He was below the yellow line last week, and is praying for a number big enough to bring him out of the danger zone. Kevin loses 3 kilos, which increases his total weight lost to 41 kilos and his percentage to 19.07%. At the moment he is sitting just above the yellow line, with the two girls still waiting to be weighed-in.

Marilyn is next up to step up onto the scale, and she too loses 3 kilos. Marilyn has now lost 36 kilos to date, and her percentage of 22.78% moves her into fourth place.

Meanwhile, Carlo quietly watches as his name drops down the leader board. It looks like that immunity might come in handy after all. Carlo is just above the yellow line now, while Kevin slips below it.

For the second week in a row, Martha is the last person to weigh-in. She knows that she has given it her best effort this week in training, but is soon shocked to realize that her hard work failed to pay off. She has lost nothing this week. Her total weight loss percentage remains at 20.47%, and that puts her in sixth place, below the yellow line with Kevin.

Martha and Kevin are now both up for elimination. Kevin has once again finished at the bottom of the leader board, despite pulling solid numbers on a weekly basis.

Exasperated, Kevin says, “It sucks that even though I’ve lost 41 kilos, I’ve been below the yellow line for 2 straight weeks. It might be my last day today, but I just have to think positive.”

Back at the villa, Carlo is on edge knowing that the former Blues have the majority vote, however he still does his best to back up his fellow Filipino, “I am 110% proud of Kevin. He has worked so hard and he still needs this more than anyone else here.”

The former Blue Team is now in a perfect position to get rid of another Red Team member.

David, for one, seems to have his mind made up already, “As much as I love Kevin, I will never eliminate a Blue Team member while we have the chance to eliminate a Red Team member. It’s been our goal from the very beginning; we made a promise to each other. We will not do it.”

Desperate to find out how Kevin did at the weigh-in, Kristy decides to pay him a visit at the villa. She enters Kevin’s room to find him sitting alone on his bed. All of Kristy’s worst fears come true when she learns that Kevin is up for elimination against Martha, a former Blue Team member.

An emotional scene takes place between trainer and trainee, as Kristy spurs Kevin on, telling him, “You have come such a long way in the time that I’ve known you. You’ve changed your life completely more than anyone in the house. Kevin I’m so proud of you.”

The two are lost in tears, as they share what could be their last moment together. A distraught Kristy tries her best to convince Kevin that there might be a way out, and encourages him to plead his case.

Taking Kristy’s words into consideration, Kevin decides to try to convince the former Blue Team members to change their minds. But when seated in front of David, Tony and Marilyn, his shyness gets in the way. Luckily, Carlo is there to help him out.

Carlo tells the former Blues that Kevin is, “not ready to go home yet, because he is still embarrassed about who he is. He doesn’t feel like he can rejoin society. He feels like he’s still going to go home, and hide at night. We’re all fat for our own reasons, but his life is seriously at risk. He still needs more.”

Quietly sobbing to himself, Kevin knows that there is nothing much left to say. It is up to the former Blues to decide if he deserves to stay in the game more than Martha.

With anguish and exasperation, Kevin says of the former Blue Team members, “I am angry at the former Blue team because I think that they have no heart. They just think what’s best for the former Blue Team, and I can do nothing about it. Their hearts are like stone.”

In a separate meeting in the Blue Villa, Marilyn remains undecided about whom to vote for, torn between keeping Kevin who needs this experience more than the rest of them, and maintaining loyalty to the Blue alliance.

Later in the elimination room, Carlo is the first to reveal his vote. As expected, he has written Martha’s name down.

David is up next and his vote for Kevin is delivered with a strong statement, “I will never ever vote out a former Blue Team member. By the grace of God, we are one strong unit. And it’s Blue all the way.”

Carlo shakes his head and fires back, “You will have to vote for someone on the blue Team eventually.”

Marilyn is next. She has chosen to vote for Kevin because she feels that he needs more time to complete his journey.

With 2 votes for Kevin and just 1 for Martha, Sarimah informs Aaron that if he has voted for Kevin to leave, then he will be leaving.

Aaron takes his time to explain his vote, “This was a tough choice because on one hand you have someone who is really overweight and needs all the help he can get. On the other hand, you have a person who is only nineteen and has a lot to look forward to. One who has to get things right now or else she’s going to have problems like most of us have had going into our twenties and thirties.”

And with that, Aaron lifts his tray cover to reveal his vote for Kevin. There is no need to reveal Tony’s vote. It is the end of the road for Kevin.

As he prepares to make his way back into the real world, Kevin reflects upon his time on The Biggest Loser Asia.

“This is the best thing that ever happened in my life, because this is a life changing experience for me. I know now that nothing is impossible. You just have to focus, put your mind to it, put your heart to it and just believe that you can do it. And definitely you’re going to see the results.”

With Kevin gone, Carlo is now the last remaining ex-red team member left in the game, standing alongside five former blue team members - David, Tony, Aaron, Marilyn and Martha.

Only 6 contestants remain, and with two more eliminations to go, who will make it to the end? The ultimate question remains - who will become Asia’s First Biggest Loser?
