Episode 9: “Bad Karma”

Morale on the Red Team is once again at an all-time low following Nadia’s elimination from the game. Upon their return to the villa, the sight of Christine brings a huge smile to Hafiz’s face. He has developed strong feelings for Christine over the past few weeks and is delighted that she is still in the competition. The Red Team now has only three contestants, half of their competitors!

The morning after Nadia’s elimination, the Reds inform Kristy of the Blue’s water loading strategy, who then becomes shocked and upset by the news.

The angry Kristy says, “This is just ridiculous. I don’t know whether Dave knows about this. I don’t know where it’s coming from. But it doesn’t sit well with me. It’s not my methodology and it never will be.”

And while Red member Carlo is secretly hoping that the Blue’s cunning strategy would backfire and that ‘karma’ would bite them eventually, the blue team celebrates their latest victory with Dave back at the villa.

Marilyn and Martha confess to Dave of their water-loading strategy and how they drank an excessive amount of water ahead of the past weigh-in after finding out that their weight-loss wouldn’t count towards their team’s total. Dave tells his team that he feels it’s not a problem with him as their game play has put the Blues with a greater lead.

And the task is at hand for Marilyn and Martha. Marilyn is working hard to shed off her extra water weight in order to pull a big number at the end of the week.

She says, “I know that water is not like fat, and it’s much easier to remove from the body. So I simply have to work my ass off to sweat it off.”

With his crush on Christine out in the open, Hafiz is starting to get irritated with the constant teasing by his mates. But all jokes aside, his team mates are actually beginning to worry if Hafiz has dropped the ball.

It is Martha who vocalizes the Blue’s sentiment. She explains, “Hafiz is truly, madly, deeply in love with Christine. Even during trainings, he’s not focusing. It’s affecting him too much.”

On the red front, Christine is suffering more than the usual aches and pain from the strenuous work out session, and finds herself unable to ignore the growing pain in her knee. The pain has not subsided even after two weeks and goes to the hospital for a diagnosis. An MRI scan shows that she has a cartilage rip in her right knee, but much to her relief, the doctor is able to inject her knee cap with a lubricant, which will let her continue training and being in the competition.

Back at the Biggest Loser Asia camp, Kristy confronts Dave on the Blue’s water-loading strategy, which she feels is unfair and tantamount to cheating. But Dave thinks otherwise. He is convinced that water loading is not a breach of integrity as none of the rules have been broken, and remains supportive of anything his team does to win, whether or not it seems unfair to the Red Team.

The relationship between the two trainers begins to show signs of conflict.

Later that day, Carlo, Christine and Kevin are surprised to see Kristy draped in a Filipino flag and carrying a large cheque. She informs them that over US$60,000 aid money has been raised for the Filipinos devastated by the typhoon that hit the nation last year, and asks the Reds to think of this as motivation to always do their best.

The all-Filipino team is thrilled and appreciative, as they know that the money would greatly help a lot of people that have been affected by the flood, and especially Del, their ex-Red Team member who had injured his elbow while trying to evacuate his home during the flood.

A beach obstacle awaits the teams at the next challenge, one that requires them to run, swim and dig. And while, the Blues choose David, Marilyn and Hafiz to sit out so as to make the teams even in numbers, the Red Team is determined to come out tops this time.

Carlo and Tony set off into the water and Carlo proves to be a stronger swimmer than Tony, thus opening up a huge lead for the Red team for the first time.

“I didn’t feel any pressure from Tony. I didn’t even see him during in whole challenge. I was running my own race.” Says Carlo.

Finishing the obstacle, Carlo hands the shovel to Christine and she starts digging the sand furiously looking for a buried wooden box. Like many obstacles that require searching, Christine finds herself down with bad luck and her Blue competition Aaron soon catches up. Aaron has begun digging the sand using his bare hands and even to his surprise, he finds the wooden box within minutes.

While Christine struggles at her task, the Blue’s Martha begins the last leg of the obstacle. She quickly blows up a beach ball, which she is to get through a hoop. And after just a few tries, Martha succeeds, and she seals another victory for the blue team.

Now the Blues have the power to select a member of their team to sit out the weigh in, which they decide unanimously that it would be Aaron, Tony and Hafiz. But before as part of winning the challenge, they will get to enjoy a gourmet meal by the beach – something the cooks in the house – Marilyn and Tony – must be glad to hear!

At the Blue Team’s last chance workout, Dave talks to his team about water loading. He feels that competition is coming to a point where the Blue Team is making some very shrewd decisions about how to play the game, but Dave expresses to the team how he isn’t supportive of Marilyn and Martha risking their health by drinking an excessive amount of water. Dave reminds them that water-loading has to be done safely.

Heading into the weigh-in, the Reds are filled with trepidation having lost the week’s challenge as well as having the uncertainty of Martha and Marilyn’s contribution to the Blue team’s overall weight loss this week.

The Blues kick off the weigh-in with Aaron and Hafiz losing two kilos each. But shock and disappointment await Tony, who had dropped over 10 kilos at the last weigh-in. He hasn’t lost any weight this week! Having decided to sit out Tony’s weight loss from the overall, the Blue team is clearly relieved.

Christine is the first person on the Red Team to step up to the scale. She loses two kilos. Martha is next and is expecting to see a big loss appear on the screen of their week’s weight. But to her disappointment, she only loses three kilos.

“I don’t think the water strategy worked. I’m not pissed at myself, but I’m not trying it next time.” She complains of her disappointment later.

Marilyn goes after Carlo who showed a loss of three kilos, and is thrilled that the water loading tactic worked for her. She has lost most amount of weight among the contestants thus far – adding four kilos to the Blue team, and creating a lead of two kilos. But next up is Kevin from the Red who drops another three kilos, pushing the red team to a kilo lead away from the cutting room.

David is the last member to weigh in. He knows that he only needs two kilo loss to secure the third straight victory for the Blue Team. And neither he nor his teammates are worried because David has lost big numbers consistently throughout the competition.

Before stepping on the scale, a confident David says, “I’ve done my best this week and I believe that I have won this weigh for the Blue Team.”

To everyone’s surprise, a big fat zero pops up on the screen. David is visibly crushed and the Reds can’t believe their luck.

Christine says with a smile, “Never in our wildest dreams would we think that David would lose a zero, but you know plateau hits at the right time.”

Back at the villa, the Blues are apprehensive. David apologizes to his team. He doesn’t understand what went wrong after putting in his all at training.,

His team mate Hafiz is also concerned and speaks up to the Blues, “This is definitely a tough decision, we all have worked hard. But at the same time for myself, I lost 2 kilos today.”

Even though his performance of a two kilo weight loss should put him in good stead, Hafiz is aware that his team disapproves of his huge crush on Christine, and may use that as an excuse to boot him out of the competition. In the event that his team does vote him out, Hafiz decides that he has to see Christine for one last time before going into the exit room. He gives her flowers and card, and the two of them share a tearful goodbye.

During elimination, Hafiz suffers the brunt of the Blue team’ disapproval of his crush on opposing team member Christine.

Marilyn and David are quick to point out Hafiz’s recent lack of focus in training. And even the outspoken David tells Hafiz, “your relationship with Christine just blew up your chances in this competition.”

Hafiz then surprises everyone in the room by not voting for anyone, and even expressing his affection for Christine by writing “I love Christine” on his placard.

Aaron is next in line and chooses to vote out his roommate Hafiz, adding “I was surprised that somebody who started so strong just lost focus. And as much as he is sad to leave here, he is much sadder to be leaving Christine.”

With three votes for Hafiz, Sarimah tells him it’s time for him to say good-bye.

Hafiz leaves the Biggest Loser Campus 35 kilograms lighter but not without one final display of affection for Christine.

“I would like to dedicate the 35 kilograms I lost to Christine. I hope she will continue this journey for me as well.”
