Episode 12: “Last Man Standing”

Kevin’s departure from the competition seems to have left a void. Everyone in the room seems to be lost in their own thoughts. Currently, only 6 contestants are left in the competition, with five former Blue team members and only one former Red team member, Carlo.

The strong alliance between the former Blue team members is still apparent, and as David puts it, “Carlo is the only man standing left from the Red team and the former Blue team will try to do our best to eliminate Carlo because that has been our goal.”

Carlo is clearly aware that he is threading on dangerous grounds this week, as all guns will be pointing towards him. However, it seems that this has spurred him on further to stay in the competition.

“It makes me want to work extra hard, to stay above that yellow line so that they have no chance to vote me off. I am not going home till I am finished. I’m going all the way”, says Carlo with determination.

The morning after elimination, the remaining contestants gather at the villa.

Kristy is obviously disappointed in discovering that Kevin was not around, saying, “Martha had lost 0 weight. She virtually doesn’t need this competition anymore. And yet they get rid of Kevin who so desperately needs to be here.”

However, it is obvious now to everyone that the former Blues will never vote against each other. Carlo then hands over a letter to Kristy left for her by Kevin. Written behind a photo taken on the first day, Kevin’s words break her heart, especially when Kevin stated how she had changed his life.

Dave then talks to everyone gathered around, emphasizing more than ever on the fact that it is going to be their weight loss or an immunity ticket that will save them from going home, and urges them not to slack off.

With renewed vigour, the six remaining contestants hit the gym. The former Blues work out harder than before, evident with the sweat running down their faces. Dave gives them an extra push and reminds them that it is imperative that they maintain their positions in the rankings and constantly keep the yellow line in sight, so that they can do whatever it takes to stay above it.

The last man standing from the former Red team, Carlo, takes a walk with Kristy. Sharing their thoughts on how tough the competition has become, both Carlo & Kristy are aware that right now, not only does Carlo need to train like never before, he also needs a bit of luck to stay in the competition.

Kristy voices her concern, saying, “Carlo doesn’t have as much weight to lose, unlike Aaron, David or Tony. So it’s a lot harder for him.”

Keeping his spirits high, Carlo walks up to the challenge with the Filipino flag wrapped around his shoulders. Upon seeing the row of baskets which were covering platters underneath, Carlo knows that they are all in for a tough challenge this week.

Sarimah explains to the contestants that they must eat whatever is under the baskets on the table to win immunity, along with a special prize. However, for this challenge, the contestants are given the option to opt out and not take part. With the tempting prize of winning immunity, not one contestant is willing to give up on this opportunity, and they all choose to take part, unsurprisingly. On the count of three, they all lift the baskets, revealing what they have to consume to win this challenge – jelly.

As each bowl of jelly contains 2,545 calories, the contestants know that this is going to be no mean feat! On Sarimah’s count, the challenge begins.

Abandoning her spoon, Marilyn starts scooping up the jelly to give her an edge over the others. Soon after, she gives up her chair as well. Slurping, gulping and swallowing, the contestants try every possible trick to work their way through the sugary bowl in the fastest time possible. However, moments later, David decides that it is too much for him. Tony, Martha, Aaron soon follow suit as well.

Now, the competition is just down to Marilyn and Carlo. Almost gagging on the jelly, the two refuse to give up. Marilyn starts to complain about her stomach hurting, but even that doesn’t stop her. Her former Blue teammates are cheering her on, eager for her to win the immunity rather than Carlo. It is now down to the last few mouthfuls, and Marilyn manages to swallow the jelly just seconds before Carlo!

Marilyn is overjoyed at having won immunity, but it just gets better. Sarimah tells her about the special prize she has won as well – a helicopter ride across Kuala Lumpur to take in the spectacular views of the city from above! Taking her position in the chopper, she can hardly wait to be off in the air.

Back in training, the six contestants get into the swing of things quickly. They know that each of them still has a big task in front of them – to stay above the yellow line. Without a doubt, this uphill task is the hardest for Carlo. With Marilyn winning immunity, he has to make sure that he beats Tony’s weight loss for the week.

Kristy and Dave then take the contestants for a surprise work out. With Stephan Fox, the Vice President of the World Muay Thai Council leading the way, six muay thai fighters are ready to put the contestants through a memorable work out session. Constantly motivating and pushing the contestants, the muay thai professionals take training to new heights for the contestants. The pace is relentless and there is no slacking off.

For ‘Last Chance Workout’, Kristy decides to take Carlo for a run. Knowing that he wasn’t able to win immunity at the challenge, Kristy is more than just concerned about Carlo’s position in the competition, with the former Blues watching out for each other.

Soon, it is time for the weigh-in. With just six contestants remaining gathered in front of Sarimah, the room feels emptier than ever. Having won immunity, Marilyn starts the weigh-in. With a starting weight of 158 kilograms, Marilyn has lost a total of 36 kilograms to date. Her smile is one of relief and satisfaction as she sees three kilograms on the board as her week’s weight loss, with a respectable 24.68% of total weight loss percentage.

Tony’s apprehension is evident as he slowly steps on the scales next. Like Marilyn, he too is relieved with his week’s weight loss. He has lost four kilograms this week. With a total weight loss percentage of 27.21 %, Tony overtakes Marilyn on the rankings.

Aaron’s weight loss of four kilograms for the week pushes his total percentage of weight loss to 27.67%, catching up with Tony and at the same time taking the much-coveted top spot in the rankings.

Following him is his former Blue teammate Martha. Having lost no weight at all the previous week, she is keen to get up on the scales and see if her hard work has paid off, but as a number three comes up on the board, Martha’s disappointment is obvious. She knows that her 22.83% of total weight loss percentage may not be enough to keep her above the yellow line.

Martha had expected to gain a greater weight loss number this week, saying, “Because I lost no weight the previous week, I was expecting this week would be a bigger weight loss. I did work very hard, so I was quite confident that I would pull a four or five.”

Next in line is someone who is more than used to seeing his name in the first position in the rankings – King David. His six kilograms loss for the week impresses everyone in the room. He throws his hands in the air and is overjoyed as he realises that he has broken the 50 kilograms mark in his weight loss journey. As he celebrates his 32.48% of total weight loss percentage, Martha’s heart sinks as she sees her name move below the yellow line.

Carlo gets up on stage next, but remains calm and tells Sarimah that "It’s in God’s hands.”

However, the pressure on him is apparent, and as he steps on the scales, he knows that he needs at least 2 kilograms to beat Tony, who is his immediate competitor as far as the weight loss ranking for the week is concerned.

The room echoes with a loud gasp and a single loud cheer as a massive number nine shows up on the board. Tony hangs his head low as Carlo celebrates his incredible weight loss. With his total weight loss percentage standing at 29.55%, Carlo races straight to number two in the rankings, right behind David.

Ecstatic and more confident than ever, Carlo exclaims, “Nine kilos is the most I have ever lost in this whole competition. I can’t emphasize how much I needed a number like that at this stage. It set me up really well for the final week. I am going to work every bit as hard as I did, if not harder to make sure I have a place in the top four.”

The six contestants walk out of the weigh-in room with heavy hearts, knowing that a tough task is waiting for them back at the villa. The deliberation is quieter than usual. Tony acknowledges Carlo’s nine kilograms weight loss, but not forgetting to ask Martha how she is feeling.

Everyone has their own deliberations this elimination. Aaron feels torn between having to choose between two people whom he cares deeply for. Meanwhile, Marilyn is feeling guilty that it was her immunity that caused Tony to be pushed below the yellow line. Tony talks to his roommate David separately and explains to him that he must not feel sorry for either him or Martha because at the end of the day, someone has to go home.

Sarimah welcomes them to this tough elimination and points out the fact that the trio consisting of David, Martha & Tony is about to be broken up. She reminds David of how he has always talked about never voting off a Blue team member and asks him how he is feeling at the moment.

David can only say, "Now the time has come and I have made my decision and you know it’s a part of the game.”

The mood in the elimination room has never been heavier and emotions are running high.

The elimination process starts with the Biggest Loser of the week, Carlo. He is more than just honest as he tells everyone that the person he has voted for is his immediate threat and it is no surprise that it is Tony’s name on the card. David has clearly been dreading this part of the competition and is almost reluctant as he lifts the lid on the platter. David’s vote is for Martha. With a vote each for Tony and Martha, it was Marilyn’s turn to vote. She puts Tony’s name on her card.
This leaves Aaron to be the last person to share his vote. Before he reveals his vote, Sarimah takes the chance to remind the contestants that if Aaron votes for Martha and there is a tie, the decision will be based on Tony & Martha’s individual total weight loss percentage. Since Tony’s weight loss percentage is higher than Martha’s, his fate lies in Aaron’s hands.

Having a similar game plan as Carlo, Aaron bases his decision on strategy, voting off the bigger threat to him in the competition – he reveals Tony’s name on the card.

With three votes against him, Tony has to leave the competition.

Just before leaving the room, Tony reminds everyone that he has “no regrets”, but he is sad that he is leaving behind “a brother, a sister and a great competitor”.

With that, Tony’s journey has come to an end, leaving five remaining contestants to fight it out for the ultimate title of being Asia first Biggest Loser.
